Choosing the right business: A strategic approach

  • The selection of business, might take several meetings between the student, the parent, and the college committee, and will include current market studies, market demand, connection with exports, availability of raw materials locally, margin acceptability, competition of similar products and other important business selection matters.
  • The selection of business must fulfill at least 15 of the 20 important following criteria in order that the business can run for a very long time and even pass on to the next generation and can be run with ease and comfort.
  • Sacrificing some criteria are possible, provided some of the other criteria are extremely powerful to offset the cancellation.
  • Important criteria for selection of a good business.
  • It must have very very low competition or zero competition, if possible.
  • One unit currency must become over five units of currency, passing through the business, preferably six or seven currency.
  • sales should not be in cash. Sale proceeds must be going only to the bank account.
  • Business product, either finished or raw material cannot be stolen
  • Business product, either finished or raw material should not be perishable.
  • Sales values of each sales must be high value at least USD 5,000 each sales.
  • The business must expand at least 50% in a year or diversify to that extent ,this is to take care of unexpected perils that may come across the business.
  • The business must have alternate customers to supply the finished product.
  • There must be a lot of scope for increasing the sales of the product.
  • High tech or high management people should not be required in the business. Minimum required in these categories must be within the close family circles, like husband, wife, son, or daughter only or at the maximum daughter-in-law, son-in-law category.
  • The business must allow free time for the owners to relax and have leisure time and leisure outings for a week or so, or for attending important friend or family’s function for two or three days.
  • The business must allow free time for the owners to think, and work towards another new business for expansion and stability of the owners business world, for at least 40% of the working time.
  • The business must have money overflows to pay all the government taxes, like income tax, paye tax, sales tax, excise duty, etc.
  • All payments, preferably should be upon sale of material or services. However, credit sales can be accepted, provided the client is a large reputed company.
  • The business must have equal mixture of elderly and young people, and similarly, an equal mixture of ladies and gents for a balance labour, which can give rise to a peaceful atmosphere and less chaos in the company.
  • The ratio of turnover to the number of labour must be as high as possible.
  • The ratio of turnover to total salary bill must be as high as possible.
  • The business must have alternate source of raw material suppliers in its production line.
  • The business must carry on with the next generation and the following generations thereafter, as far as possible.
  • For catering to the above requirements of item 16, the business must have almost all the above qualities plus must be totally cheating free, must be done only with white money, and should not cause any harm to anyone whatsoever.
